She is the incomparable Jehanne, alone in a castle with a child who is not her husband's.

He is Galeran of Heywood, believed dead in a far-off land, newly returned to his country to reclaim his land --- and his errant wife.

Proud and unyielding, Jehanne refuses to beg forgiveness from the husband she has unknowingly betrayed ... yet secretly loves with all her heart. Enraged and wounded by her cruel faithlessness, Galeran cannot ask for what he longs most to have: Jehanne back in his arms --- his bed --- his life.

Criticism Based On Books The Shattered Rose (Medieval Lords/Dark Champion #3)
Full of hearbreakUsually, I read books by this author that are set substantially later. This one caught my eye, and then my mind, and finally, my heart. It is full of pain, although it ends in triumph. The characters sometimes seemed to be almost in hell, despite being quite nice people. The villain was sufficiently bad, but at the same time, I almost felt sorry for him. All in all, an excellent book.

The guy leaves her alone for years going to Crusades, he stops sending letters a year ago, word is sent that he's dead, the wife is alone with a castle that needs protecting, she finds another man and now he is back, thinking he has the right to KILL her, or at least whip her in front of everyone for HER crimes? I am not liking this. It's not being easy for me to accept this. What crime is it if he was supposedly dead and people were pressuring her to find someone to take care of her lands? HUH?

This was the first book I read where the heroine cheated on the hero. I read this book as a challenge to myself. I don't like adultery as a theme, and the sex of the offender is immaterial. I will occasionally find a romance with this theme that I like regardless, and this is one of them. But it takes a powerful storyline to get past my bias. It wasn't a comfortable book for me to read at all, but I was glad I did tackle this book.Jehanne really messed up bad. She knew it. And she got caught.

Predictable in many areas. Never felt drawn into story. Liked secondary characters better than primary.

the only thing i liked beside the hero was the secondary characters of Aline and Raoul. The heroine was not a heroine. I did not take issue with her action that caused the turmoil when her husband came back, it was her behavior afterwards....her willingness to surrender a child, her behavior toward the other man....nope i hated it... finished it only because I had hopes of the hero tossing her out... spoiler...........................HE DID NOT...lol

I pretty much adore everything Jo Beverley wrote. She was clearly one of the best writers in the genre. However, this was not one of my favorites. That being said, no Jo Beverley novel can ever be bad and this one was somewhat entertaining.

Excellent story. It's about betrayal and the forgiveness thereof, and it's really, really good. The hero is rushing home from the Crusades, anxious to see his beloved wife and the son born after he left to go on Crusade-- the reason he left in the first place, hoping to induce God to give them a child. But when he arrives, things are not at all as he envisioned and he has to cope with the changed reality. Unusually for a romance, most of the story is in the hero's POV, because he is the one who
