Weigh Up Of Books The Glory of Christ (Works of John Owen #1)
It was strange reading this book how timeless Owen's thoughts are. Even though it was written several hundred years ago, his words still deeply affect the modern Christian. This may be the best book I read all year. Definitely would recommend

This is a life changing book. It is an extremely helpful in-depth meditation on the wonderful subject of the Glory of Christ. I found it helpful to read the book over a few months so that I could regularly meditate on this glorious subject.

I return to Owen, having studied his work for my PhD, from time to time and every time I am astonished by his insight. His breadth of Scripture knowledge is exceptional but so also his knowledge of the human heart and mind. More to the point: this book on the glory of Christ is profound. Why dont contemporary writers urge this? Why do contemporary preachers (like me) neglect urging people to consider Christs glory. John 17:24 refers to Christs prayer for his disciples to see his glory: so this

This book has significantly changed how I read the Bible and, to be quite honest, how I experience God. I don't think this work was the sole cause of it but I think the theology contained within made significant changes in me. The Lord used the writings of this dead man from the 16th century to give me a vision of reading the Scriptures with 2 things in mind: everything is about knowing and enjoying the glory of Jesus Christ and seeing and beholding his beauty. As difficult as Owen is to read,

I am currently on my 5th read through, I hope that I get it this time.

I heard of this book through J.C. Ryle, who quoted it quite a bit in his "Holiness". Convicting is the word I'd use to describe this. One of Owen's statements I found particularly convicting is that if you don't take pleasure in pursuing God in earth, or enjoy meditating on His glory, or seeking to serve Him, you're not prepared for heaven. And you know, I don't usually give Heaven much thought but-- he's right! I'm usually not a fan of abridgements, but this one was well done.
