I'm on a quest of reading as many books as possible encompassing Spanish/Latin American authors by the end of this summer, and this book happened to be on my list. I've actually read it in Spanish since I prefer not to read translated works (loss of meaning), and I was pleasantly surprised by its complexity and overall critique of the social schism in Oviedo. This was a book that I had wanted to read for years. I love Spain, love 19th Century novels, love the fascinating female central character. If there was ever a book destined for my favourites shelf next to Madame Bovary, this was it. I found this a bit of a struggle because it is so long - over 700 pages - but I did enjoy it in the main. The main characters are all struggling to one extent or another to control their sexual urges, or at least not allow them to get them into trouble, but of course they do. Gives a perspective of life in small Spanish towns, it was one of the first books I read in Spanish literature. It is very nice and also learnt many vocabularies. I recommend this book.
