I read this book after reading The Red Sea, so my knowledge of future events was a bit warped, but besides that, I found this book to be a mixed bag. I really enjoyed the interactions between Dante and Blays (I fell in love with him in this book), but the story itself... I won't lie, it dragged in more than a few places. I listened to the audiobook, and there were times I'd find my mind wandering off, even if the narration was beautiful. Besides that, I liked the plot itself. It's a nice play on

The writing at times is rambling, the plotting at times is messy, the world building at times seems disjointed, the character development at times is jarring and our young protagonist seems to luck his way in to, or out of, most situations.Despite that this is a fun read. I'm about to finish The White Tree (I purchased the entire trilogy for Kindle) but I feel certain I won't change my rating regardless of the final chapters... For me, this series opener was "just OK" - I didn't completely dislike it, nor am I compelled to pick up the next book right away.
