Ilustration Concering Books Black Sheep

With her high-spirited intelligence and good looks, Abigail Wendover was a most sought-after young woman. But of all her high-placed suitors, there was none Abigail could love. Abigail was kept busy when her pretty and naive niece Fanny falls head over heels in love with Stacy Calverleigh, a good-looking town-beau of shocking reputation and an acknowledged seductor. She was determined to prevent her high-spirited niece from being gulled into a clandestine marriage with handsome Stacy, a plausible fortune-hunter. The arrival to Bath of Stacy's uncle seemed to indicate an ally, but Miles Calverleigh is the black sheep of the family. Miles Calverleigh had no regard for the polite conventions of Regency society. His cynicism, his morals, his manners appalled Abigail. But he turns out to be her most important ally in keeping her niece out of trouble. He also turned out to be the most provoking creature Abigail had ever met - with a disconcerting ability to throw her into giggles at quite the wrong moment. Yet she was irresistibly drawn to his knowing smile. But how could she persuade her wealthy, respectable family to accept this unconventional, unsuitable man?

Column Based On Books Black Sheep
Witty and laugh out loud funny... Black Sheep is priceless. Having read all of Georgette Heyer's Regency romances in my youth I'm now revisiting, where possible, some of my favourites in audio version. A talented narrator/actor adds a lot to a well written story, especially when it is peppered with eccentric and out of the ordinary characters. This is one such story, Id forgotten how much I loved it. Definitely a comfort read/listen if one needs a pick-me-up. This has to be one of the best

Real Rating: 4.3* of fiveThere are reads, and there are Reads. Among the Heyerish, this is a Read. It's a 1966 publication, so after the author's health decline picked up speed, but before its near-twin Lady of Quality exemplified how far the mighty can fall, so it's a late work and (in my never-humble opinion) her last near-great book. It misses the astonishing, glittering peaks of Devil's Cub or Faro's Daughter or The Reluctant Widow, but not by a large margin; its verve and panache are the

What do older HR readers like me do when their favorite and trusted HR authors (and there aren't very many of these) haven't published in a while and all the new HR authors (with a couple exceptions) that have popped up in recent years write what feels like total anachronistic drivel? Well, I decided to go back to my oldies but goodies. I hadn't read Georgette Heyer in several years so I chose this one, a very favorite, if not my favorite, Heyer book. This didn't use to be my favorite Heyer. Back

3.5* for this Georgette Heyer book. The highlight of the book is its humorous dialogue in the impeccable Georgette Heyer style. Very witty and enjoyable. Another thing I liked about the book is it is about mature individuals and the depiction is very interesting. The leads are well developed characters. Mr. Miles Calverleigh is outrageous, extreme and unbelievable but at the same time he is a person with a great deal of kindness, though he seldom shows it. For all his absurdities and

My second favorite Heyer romance after Cotillon. The wordplay between Abby and Miles is spirited, entertaining, and wryly amusing. Miles is always ready to prick at the edges of propriety. Abby and Selina's friendship as sisters is lovely, I don't deal well with hypochondriacs so I'd not seek this, but I appreciate the camaraderie. Fanny is their niece and quite a silly goose, but then aren't we all at that age--and yeah, that's the theme of the story. Foolish indiscretions of youth and their

I'm slightly embarrassed that I love these romping Regency romances so much! Georgette Heyer had Skills. I know this because 'hopeless romantic' is not a personality trait most people, including those who know me best, would ascribe to me. Yet here I am again thoroughly charmed and thrilled by her simple story of a love match.

I really hate when these book blurbs are so very misleading...Abby Wendover, 28, is trying to keep her headstrong niece, Fanny, out of an impetuous match with the unworthy Stacy Caverleigh. When a "Mr. Caverleigh" checks into the local hotel, she has words with him--before realizing he's actually Miles Caverleigh, the exiled black sheep of the Caverleigh family. Not to mention: HOT TO TROT. Will the young lovers put the kibosh on the old lovers plans for...loving?1. MILES AND ABBY FOREVER. He
