The concept of this series is intriguing, but unfortunately, its effectiveness is based on how suspenseful and action-packed the scenes can be. This series is definitely targeted at a younger audience who need that much constant adrenaline in order to stay interested. I would have really loved for there to be more truth discovered, rather than the confusion and life/death stakes that defines all three books. I got more out of the prequel, even though it meant discarding the main characters inBook #1 The Maze Runner - 4 stars* Remember 🔹 Survive 🔷 Run * -Book #2 The Scorch Trials - 4 stars* There are no rules 🔷 There is no help 🔹 You either make it or you die *-Book #3 The Death Cure - 4 stars* Its the end of the line 🔹 The truth will be terrifying 🔷 The time for lies is over *

Dashner kept dangling the carrot that enlightenment and understanding was coming for the characters and the reader. It always seemed just out of reach and I almost gave up on it a few times. We are kept mostly in the dark until the third book but I'm glad I made it to the end. There is still a lot left unanswered and I do wish that the reader was given more details throughout the story. I don't think it would have detracted from the overall story. If you can keep your frustration in check... I
Well I finished all three books, but my box set came with a fourth which I thought was the final book in the series only to find out it the PREQUEL!!!! I'm so disappointed because the third book was not a sufficient ending. Maybe he's writing another? I sure hope so. In the meantime since I have it I'll read the prequel and hope it brings everything together enough for me to happily move onto other books/topics!
As good as The Hunger Games trilogy.....definitely a page turner. Has some witty humor albeit usually via juvenile retorts but I don't consider myself high brow when it comes to comedy. Books center around the Machiavellian question, "Do the ends justify the means?" and while it clearly favors one answer over another, there is still ambiguity surrounding this moral dilemma, which creates a depth/complexity of thinking not usually found in young adult fiction.
Most low reviews I read expressed disappointment, let down expecting a similarity with other near-future teen-lit (Hunger Games, Divergent). I ignored those reviews. Having not read these other books and seeking a fast paced mindless weekend read I felt confident disappointment would not be my fate. I pen this rare review to save the next unsuspecting reader. This author has lazing writing habits. Something that can be forgiven if the plot is fast paced and well developed. It was not. Lazy
